Every September I watch the same scene at the classroom door: a small person with an enormous backpack, and a parent trying to look braver than they feel. First-day nerves are completely normal - and completely manageable.
Practice the boring parts
Most school anxiety is not about learning - it is about logistics. Where do I hang my coat? What if I cannot open my lunchbox? In the week before school, rehearse the small stuff: walk the route, practice the lunchbox latches, try on the uniform. Familiarity shrinks fear.
The goodbye that helps
Long, lingering goodbyes make things harder for everyone. Create a short ritual - two hugs and a high five - then leave with a smile, even if it wobbles. Children borrow their confidence from us before they grow their own.
- Read picture books about starting school the week before
- Let them choose their own backpack or lunchbox - ownership builds courage
- Arrive early so the playground fills up around them, not before them
- Plan a small after-school treat to give the day a happy ending
By the second week, the child who clung to your leg will barely remember to wave. That is not them forgetting you - that is them flying.
