You do not need a craft cupboard full of supplies to make something wonderful. Some of the best projects start with a stack of plain paper and a glue stick. Here are five favourites from my art classroom, tested on hundreds of small humans.

Paper plate animals

A paper plate, two googly eyes, and some torn paper scraps become a lion, a fish, or whatever creature your child invents. Tearing paper instead of cutting it is brilliant for tiny fingers still mastering scissors.

Why crafting matters

Beyond the fridge-worthy results, paper crafts quietly build fine motor skills, planning, and patience. The child who folds a paper boat is also learning to follow steps and recover when a fold goes wrong.

  • Accordion-fold paper fans painted in rainbow stripes
  • Paper chain caterpillars that grow one loop per day
  • Folded paper boats - test them in the bath
  • Hand-print trees with torn tissue paper leaves

Put down a wipeable tablecloth, accept the glitter situation, and let them lead. The mess wipes away; the pride does not.
